Feel free to watch the run through of the game play
Team-based multiplayer game project created using Unity in my Master of Entertainment Technology Coursework, Building Virtual World (BVW).
Play as one of 3 toads or the sleepy ghost. As a toad, try to get the party up and going by getting the generators up and running before the ghost stuns you all. As a ghost, stop the party by stunning all the toads so you can go back to sleep and avoid the toad’s flashlight so you can remain unseen.
Contribution to the game
This game is created using Unity in a team of 5 comprising of 2 programmers, 2 artists and 1 sound designer in three weeks. I was one of the programmers working on connecting photon with the unity game engine, the interactive tutorial and game mechanism enhancements.
This is the first time I ever used photon to create a multiplayer game. The main technical challenge is connecting photon correctly to the unity game play. As this is a 4-players game, it is difficult to test locally so I have to set up another computer to test. As it is uncommon to create a 3v1 game, a lot of effort is poured in to create the interactive tutorial using timeline feature. Another huge challenge comes in making the ghost and toad seeing different things but still aligned in the common shared network.
Technical challenges aside, being the last game of our coursework with more luxury of time, we put in a lot of effort to ensure that all tiny details are accounted for as well. Although we have a difficult challenge in balancing the 3v1 gameplay, we played tested with at least 5 groups of players and listened to their advices to improve the game. We have introduced a short cool down for the ghost to stun the toads. At the same time, the toads can shine torchlight at the ghost to teleport them. There are many other tweaks made to make the game more intuitive and engaging.
Starting feels of the game
As the ghost, you are supposed to stun all the toads in order to stop them from holding a party. However, as a toad, your job is to fix the generator so that it will be loud enough to scare the ghost away and hold your party. You can also save other stunned toad and shine light at the ghost to scare them away. Whoever wins, it is important that you all had fun!
The toads has successfully thrown a party! Don't be sad ghost, you can always try to stop them next time! 🙂
